July 13, 2012 -- LEXINGTON HISTORY MUSEUM ANNOUNCES PLAN; COURTHOUSE SHUTTERED
For more information, contact Jamie Millard 859-321-2466

The Lexington History Museum will continue to operate even though the Old Courthouse building has been closed because of high levels of lead.

“We will continue to operate online at www.lexingtonhistorymsuem.org,” said Jamie Millard, president and CEO. “We have had a contingency plan in place for the last several years in the event the building was closed for restoration. This is not exactly what we had in mind, but the plan is in place and being executed.”

Museum management has been in discussion with the city and other entities about operating in a temporary location with a limited number of exhibits. “Certainly ‘Lexington: Athens of the West,’ ‘World War II: Lexington’s Greatest Generation,’ and ‘In Black & White: A Photographic Perspective of the African American Community’ will continue as part of our scaled-back operation,” Millard emphasized.

Ironically, the Museum has planned a Sept. 28-29, 2012, event to raise money to restore the dome. National best-selling author Steve Berry, and his wife Elizabeth, will conduct a writers workshop, with proceeds going to a restoration fund. “Initially, the workshop was for the dome. Now it’s for the entire building,” notes Millard

The Museum has an endowment fund held by the Blue Grass Community Fund that will be dedicated to preservation, renovation, and restoration of the Old Courthouse to serve the community in the future as the Lexington History Center. Donations may be made at www.goodgiving.net or mailed to the Museum at 215 W. Main St., Lexington, Ky. 40511.

The Lexington History Museum engages all people in the discovery and interpretation of the history of Lexington, Ky., and the Bluegrass Region.
